Sleep Awareness & Disconnect to Re-connect Week 18th-22nd March 2024

UPDATE#2
I have just received this lovely email from Zarach...
On behalf of Zarach, we would like to thank everyone at the St Philip's Catholic Primary & Nursery School for their incredible donation of £417. Our Every Head a Bed commitment means that for every £150.00 raised, another child will receive one of our bed bundles ensuring a good nights’ sleep and an equal opportunity to learn.

A Bed Bundle consists of a brand new bed with a mattress, duvet, pillow, sheets and covers, pyjamas, a hygiene kit, and a story book. Your donation will go towards paying for 3 beds and bed bundles, enabling those children to improve their opportunity to engage with their education and a chance to break the cycle of poverty.

We know there are many charities you could have chosen to donate to and would like to thank you sincerely for choosing to support Zarach. Please pass on our thanks to the children, staff and parents who supported your fundraising.

Kind regards

Karen Mellor
Office Administrator

UPDATE

I just want to say a whopping big THANK YOU to everyone who took part in this event. Together, you have raised an amazing £417 for Zarach!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your diaries and finding out all the wonderful ways you have disconnected from your devices and reconnected with yourselves, your loved ones and with nature!

What I loved most, was reading the impact this event has had on your mindsets as well as how you can make those changes for the better and feel so good about it.

Well Done Everyone!

And......

A special well done to Timas who won first prize in the draw along with Christina and Martina coming 2nd and 3rd.

Also, a big shout out to the staff that took part and to Miss Raftery for winning the teachers draw!

Sleep Awareness Week is in March, so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to raise funds for Zarach, a bed charity who believe in making sure they ‘Give every head a bed’, and we strongly agree with this too. We have accessed their service before for families and so we have seen the incredible impact that their generosity and support has had on children and families. In order for us to support Zarach, we need your support too, so, on Thursday 21st March, we will be having a ‘Bedhead Day/Pyjama/lounge wear Day’. We are asking for £1 per child to be paid via Teachers2Parents. The more crazy and wacky the hair, the better!

During the day, the children will be learning about the importance of sleep and what happens to our bodies and brains whilst we sleep. This will also include the things we should avoid doing before we sleep because of the negative impact they can have on our bodies, mind and well-being. Mobile phones, game consoles, TV and other electronic devices are what has the most negative impact on our sleep.

With that in mind, Leeds City Council, partnered with No Phones at Home and BBC Look North, would like to invite all schools across Leeds to take part in their own devices free week, entitled, ‘Disconnect to Re-connect’ which will run from the 18th of March to the 22nd of March. We are asking £2 per family which will also go to Zarach.

During the week, children will be encouraged to, instead of using their devices, involve themselves in alterative activities at home which we hope will support them to connect more with their friends and families and notice how this impacts their mental health and wellbeing. This could be playing games, going for walks, colouring/drawing and lots more, let your imaginations run wild. There are further ideas on the poster below.

So, as a little incentive, we are providing all families with the diary for you to fill out over the week and then the following Monday 26th March, for you to return your diaries to school. You will then be entered in to the prize draw to win a family games bundle.

Finally, I just want to say thank you for all your continued support and generosity. We truly do have wonderful families here at St. Philips.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Fox

Take a look at what some of our families got up to when they 'disconnected' from their devices and reconnected with their loved ones and nature.
